NEWBERRY — Willie Gallman is most deserving to be recognized as an exemplary certified nursing assistant (CNA). Gallman has compassionately cared for the residents of White Oak of Newberry for 36 years and is well-loved by those in his care.

His smile and kind words light up the faces of those served. With his many ears of experience, he has a cornucopia of approaches to providing quality care. Even residents with the most challenging of behaviors will allow Gallman to care for them. His sweet yet strong demeanor seems to put those in his care at ease. Family members are extremely fond of Gallman and knowing that he is there gives them a sense of security as they leave home from visits.

Gallman is not only loved by the residents but also by the employees. He is the type of team player that when his name is beside someone on the schedule, it puts a smile on people’s faces.

He is the go-to-guy on the team. When a resident refuses to eat for all others, go get Gallman. When a resident will not take a shower despite numerous attempts to persuade him or her, get Gallman. When a resident is trying to elope and no one else can convince him or her to stay, get Gallman. He is respected and favored by his peers and his actions bring the team’s mission to life.

Gallman is any employer’s dream employee. He is dependable, competent and dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of life for residents. He is willing to do whatever is needed to keep the residents safe, healthy and happy. He leads by example and cares as much for his teammates as he does for the residents. Gallman has volunteered to work holidays even if they fell on his schedule day off to allow for others who have small children to be able to enjoy time with their families. His generosity and team spirit are matchless.

Just this past year, a resident whose death was imminent began to call out. The name he called wasn’t family but his friend and caregiver, Gallman. A co-worker called Gallman at home, as it was his day off. Upon hearing about the resident’s change in condition he came in to be with this resident during his final hours. Gallman arrived at the facility in his street clothes, off the clock, and just sat with the resident as he passed.

These are just some of the many examples of why Gallman should be recognized as the certified nursing assistant of the year. White Oak is thankful that he decided to make White Oak of Newberry his home away from home some 36 years ago.
