COLUMBIA — The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Services (CARF) has re-accredited the Beckman Center for Mental Health Services, recognizing the agency for its high level of care for its clients. The international accrediting agency presented no recommendations for changes or improvements.

This is an extraordinary accomplishment for Beckman, as only three percent of CARF surveys result in no recommendations.

The Beckman Center is an agency of the South Carolina Department of Mental Health and serves seven counties: Newberry, Greenwood, Laurens, Abbeville, Edgefield, Saluda and McCormick. The center serves adults who suffer severe and persistent mental illness and children and adolescents with serious emotional disturbances and their families. Children may be served at clinics in six counties or through school based counselors or partnering agencies.

The Beckman Center partners with Abbeville, Edgefiled, Clinton, Ware Shoals and Clinton school district, the Children’s Center, Bowers Rogers Children’s Home, Uptown Family Practice, The Sexual Trauma and Counseling Center and Tri-County DJJ. In 2011, over 59,000 patient contacts were made by Beckman staff.

Beckman was noted for many strengths, including reducing hospital admissions through effective crisis intervention services in hospital emergency rooms and the development of “home share” programs which provide housing for clients with cooperating families while they complete their progress toward complete independence.

Other strengths of the Beckman program were the effective training programs for staff and the high retention rate of staff as well as the cooperation among the six center sites and their open communication.

The agency was praised for the welcoming spirit of each county based center and the clients appreciation of the respect shown them by staff.
