PROSPERITY — The 19th annual Heartland Conference Lay School of Religion will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Jan. 8, Jan. 15, Jan. 22, and Jan. 29 at Grace Lutheran Church in Prosperity.

The school brings together some of the best minds and speakers in the church who are willing to share expertise in their fields. The fee for all four nights is $10 total. Youth are admitted free. The school is hosted by the Lutheran church but persons of all denominations are encouraged to attend.

Topics include:

A. Did Jesus Really Say…? Rev. Dr. Charles P. Sigel, Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary

Jesus said, “I don’t know.” “No divorce.” “Hate your parents.” “Castrate yourself.” If Jesus really said such things, what did he mean? If you are comfortable with your faith and don’t want to be challenged, stay away. Otherwise, join us in exploring these and other hard sayings.

B. In the Potter’s Hand. Rev. Roger Clark

Rev. Roger Clark is a potter and preacher with 34 years experience. As he spins clay, he speaks to the Holy Spirit and his desire that persons will move toward God. Clark uses the potter references in Jeremiah to explore his craft and the habits of faithful living shown through the work of the potter, a craft that has changed little since Jesus’ day.

C. Parting of the Way: The Conservative/Liberal Divide in American Religious History Dr. Mike Beggs, Chair, Religion and Philosophy Department at Newberry College

In the 21st Century, numerous Christian communities of faith have been torn apart by struggles between theological “conservatives” and “liberals” wrestling to lead the Christian community in an appropriate response to the challenges modern society poses. This series can’t resolve this divide but will attempt to provide a broader framework for understanding contemporary struggles.

D. Music and Bible Study for Youth led by Lynn Grimsley and Stephanie Stoudemayer

This course is for youth seventh grade and above. The first hour-long session offers time to sing praise and worship songs, new and traditional hymns. Inspiring stories behind the songs will be included throughout the workshop. The Bible study session is designed to answer questions and relate faith to issues young people must face today. Youth are asked to bring questions as well as Bibles.

Please plan to take advantage of these learning opportunities and enjoy fellowship and food with your friends. Adults can choose to attend one course all four nights or to sample a variety of courses during the month of January.
