NEWBERRY — Blake Ridenour earned his second win over a top three opponent in the same day to help lead the No. 5 Newberry Wolves to a 25-21 win over the Lake Erie Storm in the final session of the day at the Newberry Duals.
Newberry moves to 5-0 in duals this season with the win.
Jeff Vesta (Manhattan, Kan.) got the dual off to a great start for the Wolves at 125-pounds, pinning Ian Ross at the 6:21 mark to put Newberry up 6-0, but Nick Lankford (Braselton, Ga.) was pinned in the 133-pounds bout to tie the match up.
Newberry then rattled off five straight wins to earn the dual victory, starting when B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) earned a 9-0 major decision over Tom McVicker at 141-pounds Young allowed only one escape against him the entire day.
Deral Brown (Elgin) eked out a 4-3 decision over Nate Ball at 149-pounds, and No. 2 Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) quickly pinned 157-pounder Christian Baughman in 1:57 to push the lead to 19-6.
Ridenour completed an outstanding day with a 3-1 decision over No. 3 Matt Vandermeer, making him a winner over the second- and third-ranked wrestlers in the nation on the day.
Third-ranked Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) earned a 7-4 decision over Dylan Zivcic at 174-pounds before Lake Erie stormed back.
Zev Green earned a sudden victory decision over Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) at 184-pounds, Mikey Samijlenko pinned Joey Grisko (Gloucester Township, N.J.) at the 4:39 mark of the 197 -pounds bout and Almonte Patrick pinned Matt Colter (Jacksonville, N.C.) at the 2:06 mark of the heavyweight match.
No. 5 Wolves take down No. 8 Findlay, 25-9
The No. 5 Newberry Wolves used two upsets over nationally-ranked wrestlers to earn a 25-9 victory over the No. 8 Findlay Roughnecks in the second session of the sixth annual Newberry Duals in Eleazer Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Vesta got the dual started with a thrilling 4-3 win over No. 3 Ben Sergent in the second tiebreaker period to stake to Wolves out to a 3-0 lead.
Lankford earned a 6-0 dcision over Shane Troyer to put Newberry up 6-0.
Young put up a solid performance at 141-pounds with an 11-0 major decision over Joey White, and Brown cruised to an 18-6 major decision over Jan Ulinski to push the lead to 14-0.
Seiji Borja suffered Newberry’s first loss of the day at 157-pounds, when Jordan Cowell was awarded a late takedown to earn a 9-8 decision.
Blake Ridenour (Maryville, Tenn.) offered up one of the best performances of the day at 165 -pounds, upsetting No. 2 ranked Mason True in shutout fashion with a 7-0 decision.
Sheehy made sure the bout was never within reach with a 17-0 technical fall over Alec Bissel at the end of the second period.
Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) grappled valiantly at 184-pounds against No. 1 Adam Walters, but the top-ranked Roughneck eked out a 5-4 decision.
Grisko earned a 4-2 decision over Ashton Brown at 197-pounds, and Findlay’s Andrew Tumlin closed out the dual with a 5-3 decision at heavyweight over Braden Carter (Christiansburg, Va.).
Wolves cruise to 52-0 win over Cumberland (Tenn.) in Newberry Duals opener
NEWBERRY - The fifth-ranked Newberry Wolves cruised to a 52-0 shutout victory over the Bulldogs of Cumberland University (Tenn.) in the opening match of the sixth annual Newberry Duals. Newberry moves to 3-0 on the season.
The Wolves were off to a quick 12-0 start after forfeits at 125 and 133-pounds, when Young pinned Jake Williams at the 2:46 mark to make it 18-0 after three bouts.
Brown pinned Ethyn Holbrook at the 1:40 mark to push the lead to 24-0 and Knapp earned a 10-3 decision over Shane Brown at 157-pounds to extend the advantage to 27-0.
Ridenour needed only 1:30 of the 165 -pounds bout to earn a pin over Jake Shirley, and a hard-fought 7-5 decision by Sheehy at 174-pounds put Newberry up 36-0.
Brown had the fastest pin of the bout in 37 seconds at 184-pounds and Grisko won by forfeit at 197 -pounds
The shutout was confirmed when Carter wrestled up a class at heavyweight and earned an impressive 11-3 major decision over Tyler Smith.
The 52-0 win is also impressive considering Iowa defeated Cumberland 51-0 earlier this season.
