While Newberry High athlete Tovaris Cureton was in Myrtle Beach last week participating in the North/South All-Star Game which garnered him the offensive MVP honor for the North squad Saturday, his basketball teammates went 2-0 in 24 hours as the Bulldog boys are still undefeated after four games this season.

When the Newberry High Lady Bulldogs and the Spartanburg Lady Vikings stepped foot onto the court last week in Newberry, Spartanburg had a 20-4 advantage after the first quarter as they would cruise to a 25 point victory.

Newberry led after the first quarter 13-11 Friday in Spartanburg with the hostesses keeping their starting line-up largely consisting of four seniors , while the Lady Bulldogs’ starters had less than five combined years of varsity experience heading into the season battling it out on the court much of the second half.

The size, height and maturity played in Spartanburg’s favor as they turned a three-point lead at the break into a 27 point advantage at the final buzzer, 57-30.

Tyshira Bates led the Newberry scoring with 12 points, as she had a game-high six points from the charity stripe.

Arnasia Boyd finished with 10 points while Octavia Grandy scored four points.

Newberry’s scoring ended with the two points apiece of Breanna Mathis and Fatima Sims.

With 6:58 left in the first half in the boys’ game, the Bulldogs and the Vikings were deadlocked at 18 points apiece.

Newberry went on a seven point run in 1:41 as they never trailed after this in their 68-65 victory.

The Bulldogs led at the break 38-30 and they had a 54-45 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of play.

The Vikings were determined not to lose though as they went on an 18-13 run to cut the Newberry lead to four points with 1:01 left in the contest.

It was a one possession game at 67-65 when Newberry called a time-out with 38.7 seconds to go.

Seven seconds later, Jaylen Reeder went to the free-throw line where he missed the first free throw but made the second to make it 68-65 with 31.4 seconds left in the regulation period.

Spartanburg called its final time-out with 17.2 seconds to go to set up a potential shot to force overtime, if they weren’t fouled.

The Vikings were unable to get any good looks at the basket before their final shot inside the arc fell into the hands of Bennett Wilson in the waning seconds to preserve the victory.

Spartanburg made 24 field shots, including two three-pointers while they also went 15-of-31 from the free-throw line.

Newberry made 26 field shots, including five three-points as they converted 11 of their 21 free-throws.

Notorious Booker was the only player in the game to score in each quarter as he finished with 18 points.

Kaheem Praylow scored 15 points while Trey Miller and Wilson also finished in double digits with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Jalin Alexander scored nine points while Jalen Reeder scored four points.

There was not a single lead change in either game Saturday at Fairfield Central in Winnsboro as the Lady Griffins never trailed in their 51-23 victory.

Grandy scored eight points while Arnasia Boyd, Tyshira Bates and Fatima Sims scored four points apiece.

The Lady Bulldog scoring ended with the three points of Breanna Mathis as they fall to 1-3 on the season.

The Bulldog boys led after the first quarter 15-13, but a 22-10 second quarter run gave them a 14 point advantage at the break.

Fairfield Central cut the lead to a single possession in the fourth quarter but Newberry would go on to the 67-55 victory.

Praylow was the only Bulldog on the evening to score in each of the four quarters as he finished with 16 points.

Miller and Booker each ended the night with 10 points while both Alexander and Wilson scored eight points each.

Reeder finished with seven points while three points were scored by both Tyon Williams and Jaylin Lindsay.

Jeremy Summers ended the Newberry scoring with two points.

Newberry has three games on their schedule this week with road trips to Clinton tonight and to Chapin on Thursday.

Their last home game of the 2012 calendar year will be on Friday with the hosting of the Red Devils.
