NEWBERRY — Newberry Elementary kindergartners helped to make the Earth a little greener with the planting of a tree for Arbor Day.
In South Carolina, Arbor Day is celebrated the first Friday in December and every year, a school is chosen to have a tree planted.
This year, Newberry Elementary’s kindergartners helped dig into the tradition with help from the City of Newberry who donated the crepe myrtle.
Mina Brooks, science coordinator for the district, gave a brief history lesson about Arbor Day and read a book to help connect the event to the young students.
Four kindergartners were chosen from each class to help Mayor Foster Senn plant the tree.
Braydon Heflin from Kaylyn Wicker’s class, Ja’Layia Epps from Bethany Counts’ class, Courtney Scurry from Jackie Holmes’ class and Piper Dominick from Jennifer Finley’s class all were chosen as representatives to help in the tree planting.
Brooks, Senn and Annette Davis with the Soil and Water Conservation all encouraged the students to help take care of the tree and also to help take care of the Earth.
