NEWBERRY — Newberry College director of athletics Matt Finley and head football coach Todd Knight have announced the playing schedule for the college’s 100th intercollegiate football season in 2013. The Wolves will play 11 games, with six at home.
For the second straight year, all 11 of Newberry’s games will count as in-region contests for NCAA Division II playoff qualification purposes. Kickoff times, ticket information and game promotions will be available at a later date.
The 100th season of Newberry football opens on Sept. 7 on the road against the Vikings of Elizabeth City State. Newberry is 2-0 all-time against the Vikings including a 46-20 win in the 2012 season opener.
The home schedule opens on Sept.14, when the Wolves welcome a new Division II football program to historic Setzler Field. The Panthers of Florida Tech will come to Newberry for their first-ever game against a Division II program. 2013 will be Florida Tech’s first season competing in football, and the Panthers are jumping straight into the thick of Super Region II as a member of the Gulf South Conference. FIT is a member of the Sunshine State Conference in its other sports.
South Atlantic Conference play begins on Sept. 21 in Salisbury, N.C., with a visit to Catawba College. Catawba holds a 37-35-3 lead in the all-time series.
The Wolves return home on Sept. 28 to host the Lions of Mars Hill. MHC holds a 28-14 lead in the all-time series.
Oct. 5 brings another road trip, when the Wolves head to Wingate University. The Bulldogs hold a 13-10 lead in that series.
Oct.12 sees the Wolves back in front of the Newberry faithful as they host Tusculum for the annual homecoming game. The Wolves will look to even up the all-time series, as the Pioneers hold an 8-7 lead.
The annual Bishops Trophy game will be played in Hickory, N.C., on Oct.19 at Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bears hold a 42-30-7 lead in what is Newberry’s longest-running current series.
The Wolves come back for a two-game home stand starting on Oct. 26 against UNC Pembroke, who has won the two previous meetings. November 2 will see the Brevard Tornados come to town. Newberry leads BC 6-1 in the series.
The final road trip of the season comes on Nov. 9, when the Wolves visit Super Region II finalist Carson-Newman. The Wolves beat the Eagles 47-22 in 2012, but C-N has a 28-20 lead in the all-time series.
The regular season comes to a close on Nov. 16, as Newberry hosts North Greenville. Newberry has a 9-2 all-time lead in that series.
