EDMOND, Okla. — The Newberry College wrestling team is ranked fifth in the first regular season coaches’ poll of the 2012-13 season, with three Wolves ranked in the top eight of their weight class.
Newberry falls one spot in the poll and is ranked behind Nebraska-Kearney, Central Oklahoma, St. Cloud State and Upper Iowa.
The rankings set up a great match in the second session of Saturday’s Newberry Duals, as the Wolves will wrestle with eighth-ranked Findlay.
In the individual rankings are B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.), Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.).
Young is ranked second nationally at 141 lbs. behind UNC Pembroke’s Daniel Ownbey, who is also the top ranked wrestler in Super Region I. Young is 11-4 with runner-up honors at the Pembroke Classic and a third place finish at the King Open.
Knapp is ranked second nationally at 157 lbs. behind Wisconsin-Parkside’s Dillon Bera. Knapp is ranked first in Super Region I and has a 7-2 overall record with no losses to Division II wrestlers. He finished fifth at the season-opening Hokie Open, where he notched a 5-2 record against Division I competition. He earned decisions in dual wins over Indianapolis and Lindsey Wilson last week.
Sheehy is ranked third nationally at 174 lbs. and is ranked second in Super Region I. Sheehy is 10-2 and on a nine-match winning streak with championship honors at Pembroke and King and the only pin in Newberry’s duals last week.
The Wolves host Cumberland (Tenn.), No. 8 Findlay and Lake Erie in Saturday’s Newberry Duals in Eleazer Arena.
