NEWBERRY — The Newberry Wolves claimed the championship of the 2012 Newberry Classic on Sunday with a 94-58 win over the Voorhees Tigers in Eleazer Arena.

Newberry moved to 3-2 on the season, while the Tigers dropped to 4-3. Barber-Scotia (1-5) won the consolation game over Saint Andrews (0-5), 85-68, earlier in the day.

The Wolves were led by Dondray Walker (Fountain Inn), who claimed MVP honors with 21 points, four steals, four assists and three rebounds. Demarkus Smith (Johnston) scored 12 points with three rebounds, three assists and two steals and Brandon Riley (Baltimore, Md.) scored 10 points with four rebounds, two assists and a steal for that duo to earn all-Classic honors. Quayshun Hawkins (Columbia) also scored 12 points with a team-high five assists and four rebounds.

Of note in the game was Newberry’s spectacular free throw shooting, as the Wolves connected on 21-of-22 (95.5 percent) from the charity stripe, including their first 17 free throws in a row. The Wolves were 30-of-63 (47.6 percent) from the field and 13-of-27 (48.1 percent) on three-point attempts in the game.

Voorhees opened the game with a three-pointer to take the early lead but a layup and three straight free throws from Riley would put the Wolves in front for good. From a 16-12 lead with 13:54 left in the half, Smith’s personal 6-0 run put Newberry’s lead into double digits. The lead quickly got up to 15 on Aegir Steinarsson’s (Reykjavik, Iceland) triple and a Walker three with 8:28 left in the first half put Newberry up by 20 for the first time at 36-16.

Mitch Riggs (Langwarrin, Victoria, Australia) nailed a three with 4:16 to go in the period to give the Wolves their largest lead of the half at 49-23. Newberry would take a 51-31 lead into the halftime break.

A Riggs fastbreak triple with 13:20 to play put Newberry up 68-37 for the first 30-plus lead of the game, and a pair of Hawkins free throws at the 3:17 mark gave the Wolves their largest lead of the game at 91-53, a 38-point advantage.

Also named to the all-Classic team from Voorhees were Willie Waters III and Brandon Allen, as well as Barber-Scotia’s LaKeith Scott.

Wolves run wild in 120-69 win over Barber-Scotia to open Newberry Classic

NEWBERRY — A first half offensive onslaught led the Newberry Wolves to the College’s 1,000th all-time win in men’s basketball, as the Wolves powered their way to a 120-69 victory over Barber-Scotia in the opener of the Newberry Classic in Eleazer Arena on Saturday evening.

The game opened after honoring the men’s basketball teams from 1973 to 1977, which racked up an incredible 115 wins in four seasons. The Wolves would dominate the game in the way those teams dominated the region nearly 40 years ago.

Rigg nailed a three-pointer to open the scoring and Newberry scored the first eight points of the game. After the first media timeout of the game, Newberry would not see its advantage drop to fewer than 10.

The Wolves shot 62.5 percent (25-of-40) from the field including 9-of-15 (60.0 percent) from three-point land on the way to a 74-37 halftime advantage. The 74 points in a half is believed to be a school record.

Newberry’s shooting cooled down a bit in the second half, but the Wolves still finished the game with a 55.6 percent (40-of-72) shooting percentage in the game, with a 51.7 percent (15-of-29) mark from the land of three.

Smith led all scorers with 19 points, while Hawkins and Walker each netted 17 points. Riggs and Brandon Riley (Baltimore, Md.) scored 14 apiece, while Xavier Holmes (Great Falls) had his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. James Ashby (Auckland, New Zealand) scored 10 points to round out Newberry’s seven double digit scorers.

The Wolves had 27 assists on their 40 baskets, including five from Aegir Steinarsson (Reykjavik, Iceland), who made his first appearance of the season after returning from injusry.
