Creed named South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week

ROCK HILL - Newberry College redshirt freshman Samantha Creed has been named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

Creed (Montmorency, Victoria, Australia) opened her collegiate career over the weekend by helping lead the Newberry women to a 2-0 start with victories over UNC Pembroke and Montevallo as part of the Ortho Carolina Classic.

In the Wolves’ 64-58 victory over the Lady Braves on Saturday, the Aussie scored 28 points, with help of a 6-11 day from beyond the 3-point arc. Creed added four rebounds, four assists and two steals to her stat line in the season opener.

Creed’s weekend continued on Sunday as the Wolves topped Montevallo 62-46. Against the Falcons, Creed recorded eight points, two assists, three steals and once again pulled down four rebounds. For her performance, Creed earned a place on the OrthoCarolina Classic All-Tournament Team.

On the weekend, Creed averaged 18 points per game, four rebounds per game and three assists per game. Creed also added five steals and recorded an impressive 2.0 assist to turnover ratio. From beyond the arc, Creed was a 50-percent shooter and shot 44.8-percent from the field. Creed averaged 34.5 minutes in the Wolves opening weekend.

Creed becomes the first Newberry women’s basketball player to be named SAC Player of the Week since Leanne Watson earned the honor on Feb. 21, 2011.
