BREVARD, N.C. — Newberry closes out the regular season at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brevard by looking for its first winning season since 2009.

A win against the Brevard Tornados would see the Wolves finish above .500.

Key players for a winning effort for the Wolves will be the defensive front eight, as the Tornados are the fourth different option team Newberry has seen this season.

Linebacker Apollo Stretch will look to close his Newberry career on a high note, as his 313 total tackles already ranks seventh in school history and his 218 career solo tackles guarantees he will finish second in the Newberry record books there. Eight total tackles would give him two straight seasons over a century in tackles.

Corner back Brian Spencer is tied for second in the league with five interceptions, and only a statistical anomaly keeps him out of a tie for first, as his interception of a two-point conversion attempt against Lenior-Rhyne does not count towards his season total. The senior has seven interceptions and five blocked kicks in his career.

A trio on the defensive line will look to slow the Tornados down, led by Jamal Bethune who is the team’s third-leading tackler with a career high 49 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 11 quarterback hurries. Redshirt freshman Daniel Foster has 44 tackles, and Letavious Williams has eight tackles for loss. Also, Alstevis Squirewell has 35 tackles and four tackles for loss.

Another senior to watch is Kelton Hall, who is second on the team with 62 tackles. He has 178 career tackles entering his final contest.

Wide receiver Corey Washington will look to move higher up the single-season receiving charts. He stands at 754 yards entering the final game, which ranks ninth. With a 100-yard game, he could reach third place.

Quarterback W.T. Murden also has a chance to make his mark on the record book.

Kicker Kyle “Auto” Mackey sits atop the team leader-board in points scored with 49, and is a remarkable 31-of-31 on PAT attempts, with a 44-of-44 career mark in two seasons. If his team lead holds, he would be the first kicker to lead the Scarlet and Gray in scoring since Chip Lingerfelt in 1989. He is one of only six Newberry players to make more than 30 PATs in one season.
