Eagles’ softball edges Spartanburg Christian, 3-2

The Newberry Academy softball team picked up its second victory of the week by knocking off Spartanburg Christian 3-2 yesterday at home.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out, two-run single by catcher Marina Miller. Jacqueline Strowd gave Newberry Academy an insurance run in the fifth on a run-scoring single.

Spartanburg Christian had the tying run at third after some Eagle defensive miscues, but were unable to tie the game. Jessica Cole picked up the complete-game victory after surrendering just three hits, while striking out 13. Cole did not walk a batter in the win.

Ashley Chaffee scored twice and was 2-for-3, including a leadoff bunt single in the fifth inning.Cole and Strowd both finished the game 2-for-3. The Eagles will take more than a week off before returning to the diamond next Friday when they travel to Anderson Christian.

Bulldog tennis blanks Indians

The Newberry tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-0 rout of Gilbert yesterday on the road.

The Bulldogs didn’t surrender a set in the win.

Top-seeded singles player Sam Kiser cruised past Dennis Craig 6-1, 6-2, while No. 2 Jay Bethea knocked off Trent Blackwell 6-3, 6-2. Dan Robertson blanked Matt Isaac 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 singles, while Rhys Lewis routed Sean Goodwin 6-0, 6-0.

Fifth-seed Jarrell Baxter was victorious against Brad Albus 6-3, 6-1. In doubles play, Matthew Smith and Josh Sheen edged Rhett Holston and Cole Lamons 6-3, 6-2
