PROSPERITY — The season came to an end Friday night for the Mid-Carolina Rebels, but not without a hard fought battle.

The final score was having Pendleton on top, but MC made the only touchdown of the night.

It was obvious from the beginning that this was going to be a good game.

MC received the opening kickoff and immediately caught the Pendleton Bulldog defense off guard by coming out at the beginning of the game with the spread offense.

You could hear the coaches yelling and players shifting all while the Rebels were snapping the ball. This proved to be in the Rebels favor as they immediately gained a first down, however a punt to the Bulldogs followed.

But that was only the beginning as the Bulldogs were held to a 3 and out punt by the Rebel defense. That was the story of the entire first half, with strong defenses on both sides of the field.

Both MC and Pendleton had missed field goals in the first half, but Pendleton was able to put a field goal in between the uprights near the end of the first half. The half time score was Pendleton 3, Mid Carolina 0.

This half was no different than the first with both teams giving the punt team a workout. Pendleton was able to get close enough to put another field goal in making the score 6 to 0 with 6:47 left in the third quarter.

MC struck hard shortly afterwards by stripping the ball from Pendleton and getting within striking distance.

After a couple penalties, one for MC player hurdling a Pendleton tackler, MC ended up on the other side of the 50-yard line. That did not stop them because a 50 plus yard pass for a touchdown followed, giving MC the only touchdown of the night. With a missed extra point, the score is now tied at six.

With 2:50 left in the fourth quarter, Pendleton was able to get close enough to put in another field goal, making the score now 9 to 6 in Pendleton’s favor.

With little time left, MC began driving the ball hard and got to mid field, but on third and fourth downs the passes were not caught, giving Pendleton the advantage and ability to knee the ball and let the clock run out.

This was the end of the season and we wish Pendleton the best, but I have to give kudos to the Rebels on the fight as this was definitely a battle to the end, again with the Rebels not giving up and pushing till the end.

While the season ended with more losses than wins, the seniors can be assured that their last year on the gridiron was one of very large hearts as this team was a real team and with the record did not show it, was a winning team.

As fans were leaving the stadium, several of the Pendleton parents stated to tell the boys to hold their head up and nobody had held the Pendleton team back like that all year.
