One person was killed in a wreck near Silverstreet on Sunday.

A 1995 Nissan was traveling West on S.C. Highway 34 about five miles west of Silverstreet around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

The driver, Harry Tyre Phelps, 26, of Greenwood , ran off the right side of the road and the car overturned and hit a utility pole, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Autopsy results revealed cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head” according to Coroner Craig Newton.

Prior to Sunday’s wreck traffic fatalities have jumped 125 percent in the county so far this year.

Newton also reported this is the 10th traffic fatality reported in Newberry County this year, a sharp increase from just a year ago.

The S.C. Highway Patrol, Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and Newberry Police will be doing a traffic safety blitz Monday and Tuesday to work to reduce fatal collisions in the county.
