NEWBERRY – A Newberry man has been arrested and charged with three counts of felony driving under the influence with great bodily injury in connection with a September wreck on Oxner Road that injured himself and four other people.

Cesario Arroyo Alvarez, 21, of Clyde Avenue, was driving north on Oxner Road near S.C. 34 around 9:51 p.m. Sept. 28 when the GMC Yukon he was driving ran off the right side of the road. Alvarez apparently overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn, Lance Corp. Billy Elder of the S.C. Highway Patrol said at the time.

Alvaraez was ejected from the SUV along with Christian Martinez, 20; Freddie Espinoza, 24; and Mike Martinez, 17. A 16-year-old had to be extricated from the vehicle by rescue personnel. None was wearing a seat belt.

The S.C. Highway Patrol Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is continuing to investigate the wreck.
