NEWBERRY — They put their lives on the line daily to help answer calls but the five City of Newberry reserve police officer are not paid for their services.
Each of the five officers preform law enforcement duties without compensation but all of them must undergo training and the standards of regular officers.
They ride in patrol cars with full-time officers, said Newberry Police Chief Jackie Swindler, which benefits the city by putting two officers to each car.
In addition to riding on patrols and answering calls with officers, the officers also preform other duties.
The duties include working ballgames, parades, special events, license checks and other details.
Swindler says the fall is an especially busy time of the year with so many extra activities that his department could not survive without the additional personnel.
He adds the officers also bring over 30 years of law enforcement experience with them in addition to the experience from their full-time jobs which benefits the department.
Swindler adds that others are currently going through the reserve officer training and they must go through the same application process as full-time officers.
The reserve officers were recently honored by the Newberry City Council for their volunteer work to the city.
