Prosperity-Rikard Elementary was recognized as the Upstate School Garden Winner in the Students in the Garden category at Monday’s school board meeting. Principal Tim Lyden, teacher Debra Templin and some of the student gardeners were recognized by Superintendent Bennie Bennett and Board Chair Jody Hamm. The South Carolina Farm to School Program was established to develop a connection to learning with the objectives of serving healthy meals in school cafeterias, improving student nutrition, providing agriculture, health and nutrition education opportunities, and supporting South Carolina farmers. The school was one of the pilot schools to receive a grant last year and developed three school wide gardens as well as individual gardens for each grade level. The students and teachers took ownership of the gardens for planting, watering and harvesting. Through the interactions of S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, the state department of education, Clemson Extension, Clemson University and the University of South Carolina, Prosperity-Rikard’s garden thrived.
