WHITMIRE — The first graders at Whitmire Community School put their learning into action.
On Oct. 15, the first graders recently took a trip to Nivens Apple Farm and Pumpkin Patch in Moore on Oct. 15.
Students enjoyed visiting the farm animals as well as taking a hayride to see the sights around the farm. Each student also chose a small pumpkin to take home making for a great fall day.
In science, first graders have been learning about rocks and their characteristics. At the farm, students put their science knowledge to test and were received the opportunity to experience gem mining on a small scale.
Students also had a picnic lunch and played on recess equipment. As a treat, students all drank apple cider to cool off. Before the students loaded the bus, they went through the corn maize together with our chaperons.
The students also learned about fire safety.
Phillip Wicker, a firefighter, visited first grade this month. He taught the students what to do in case of a fire in their homes.
He also stressed the importance of getting out safely as well as what to do if your clothes catch on fire. Wicker explained the importance of a firefighter’s tools.
He put on his turn out gear and explained how not to be scared if a fireman comes to save you. He told the students to never hide from a firefighter because he is there to help.
