ROCK HILL — Newberry College sophomores Dondray Walker and Quayshun Hawkins have been named to the 2012-13 preseason all-South Atlantic Conference teams as announced by the league office Wednesday.
Walker, from Fountain Inn, has been named to the preseason first team after earning second team all-SAC and SAC Freshman of the Year honors last year. He was only the second Newberry player to ever earn Freshman of the Year honors. He finished the 2011-12 season ranked eighth in the conference in scoring at 16.4 points per game, second in three-pointers made per game and 11th in steals. His 80 three-pointers in total set a Newberry record for a single season.
Hawkins, from Columbia, has been named to the preseason second team. He finished last season 12th in the conference in scoring at 14.4 points per game, first in the league in assists with 4.57 per game, fourth in the league in steals at 1.52 per game and his 3.0 three-pointers made per game led the conference. He also had spectacular buzzer-beaters against Brevard on the road to win the game and against Anderson to send the SAC Tournament semifinal game to overtime.
The duo will lead a Newberry squad which was predicted to finish third in the conference this season. The Wolves’ first action will come in an exhibition game at Purdue on Saturday, Nov. 3, while the regular season opens at home with the Mom Reeves Memorial Tournament against Warren Wilson on Nov. 9.
