Newberry College’s Laura Marquardt has been named to the 2009 DAKTRONICS All-Southeast Region First Team. With this honor, Marquardt is now eligible for All-American honors.
The Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region teams are voted on by the sports information directors of the Southeast Region. The region is comprised of the Conference Carolinas, the Peach Belt Conference, the South Atlantic Conference, Chowan University and North Greenville University.
Marquardt, a senior from Mt. Pleasant, adds the all-region honor to an already impressive list of accolades this year. Earlier this month, she was named an ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American, making her only the fourth Newberry College athlete to win the award and only the second first-team honoree from the college.
The senior was also named a first team All-South Atlantic Conference honoree and a co-recipient of the prestigious South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete award.
She started all 29 games for the scarlet and gray, which advanced to the SAC Tournament semifinals and finished the season with an 18-11 overall record. She averaged 16.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, while sinking 73 3-pointers on the season, which obliterated the previous school record.
Columbus State’s Phoebe Smith was named the Southeast Region Player of the Year. She and Marquardt are joined on the first team all-Southeast Region by Barton’s Esty Flores, North Georgia’s Syretha Marble and Wingate’s Anna Atkinson.
The second team was comprised of Francis Marion’s Kevina Ransom, Tusculum’s Jasmine Gunn, Armstrong Atlantic State’s Lacey Willis, Mount Olive’s Jasmine Whitby and Queens’ Marissa Hudley.
The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition.
NC’s McElwee named SAC Pitcher of the Week
Newberry hurler Josh McElwee and Mars Hill outfielder Brian Williams have been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Pitcher and Position Player of the Week.
McElwee, a 6-4, 200-pound sophomore right-hander from Andrews, posted a 1-0 record in his two starts during the week (both Newberry wins). In Newberry’s 13-2 win against Carson-Newman, McElwee recorded 15 strikeouts in his eight-inning effort. In fact, the first nine outs recorded were McElwee strikeouts. His strikeout tally is tied for fifth most in SAC history. The Andrews High School graduate fanned three batters in his two innings of work against Bloomsburg.
McElwee, last year’s SAC Freshman of the Year, earns conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
Williams, a 5-10, 195-pound senior from Orlando, Fla., hit .722 in four games last week with 14 RBIs, two doubles, a triple and two home runs for the Lions. The Palm Beach Atlantic product went 13-for-18 on the week, including 10-of-13 (.769) in a three-game SAC series at Wingate.
He started the week going 3-for-5 with four RBIs in a 16-14 loss to No. 23 Anderson.
In the second game of the Wingate series, Williams went 5-for-6 with seven RBIs, including a triple and two home runs.
The SAC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week are selected by a vote of the league’s nine sports information directors.
