On Sept. 20, five elected student leaders from Newberry Academy attended the South Carolina Independent Schools Student Association (SCISSA) fall conference that was held in the House of Representatives chambers at the State House.

Students representing many other independent schools from around the state were also in attendance.

During the conference, the students held a general session that included discussions on student council of the year, the student exchange program, and 2013 SCISSA spring convention. Also, resolutions were introduced that will be debated at spring convention. Students interested in running for SCISSA office were also given the opportunity to speak with the elected officials that are currently serving.

The representatives that attended for Newberry Academy were Jake Buzhardt, president; Alex Cole, senior representative; Amanda Crayne, vice president; Carman Franklin, secretary; and Brianna Kinard, treasurer. Crayne is also serving as historian for SCISSA.
