Adult Education Director David Green commented that it was a difficult task for his teachers to select only one student for Student of the Month. So, Green allowed one teacher to give the award to more than one student after reviewing their academic records.

Many of adult education students received the perfect attendance even though they have to provide their own transportation.

They come by foot, bicycle, mo-ped, cab or car. One woman walks almost two miles each way to attend class, and she walks in all types weather - hot, fair and rainy. One man comes to the morning class after working third shift. These students appreciate the second opportunity to get a state High School Diploma or G.E.D.

One of Green’s teachers asked her students to write an essay explaining their reason for attending the Newberry Adult Education program and to give their impression of the school.

All of them were good. For example, there was one essay written by Kanisha Smith that shows Newberry County the kind of people the program has and the kind of school that is available to adults in the county who need to complete their education.

The following was written by Smith:

I chose Newberry Adult Education to receive my G.E.D. because this is my hometown. Adult education was also referred to me by my guidance counselor at school. Considering my situation, this was the smart choice. Newberry Adult Education has helped me achieve my goals in a shorter period of time period. In my opinion, adult education has many advantages.

Adult education is civilized and organized. The teachers here are awesome. Since my class is small, it’s easier to get one on one time with my teacher. Another is the program itself. It has helped me a lot. When I didn’t get the chance to finish my eleventh grade, I was devastated. I felt like I had come too far not to graduate.

When I came in to take my pre-G.E.D. test, I wasn’t very confident in myself. When I got my score back and saw how well I did, it made me more secure about myself. Adult education helped because this program gave me the chance to finish my high school education.

Recently, the program helped me get a job. Not many places will hire a high school dropout, but they will hire someone who’s putting forth the effort to better their education. On Friday, I’ll be taking my G.E.D. test. Not only am I taking the test to go to college, I am taking the test to prove to myself that I can do it. Through everything that I’ve been through, I still put my education first. As soon as I pass the G.E.D., I’ll be on my way to tech school.

I picked Newberry Adult Education to get my G.E.D. because it was the right thing for me. It’s easier for me to learn here. The teachers are good, and do whatever it takes to help you succeed. Because I am attending adult education, I was able to get a job. I also got my confidence back. After Friday, I’ll be ready to leave and see what I become.
