GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Gabrielle Brodie netted her seventh goal of the season, while freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Darley had an impressive afternoon recording seven saves as the Wolves and Pioneers played to a 1-1 double overtime draw.
Tusculum (9-1-2, 4-0-1 SAC) controlled the early part of the match forcing Newberry (4-5-2, 1-3-1 SAC) keeper Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) to record her first of two first half saves in the third minute.
In the 25th Darley was unable to stop a high shot from Jana Linke as the Pioneers opened the afternoon’s scoring.
The Wolves threatened twice in the opening half, when Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) forced Tusculum’s Marissa Williams to record saves in the 23rd and 27th minutes.
The opening of the second half saw the Pioneers record four corner kicks and two shots on goal, before in the 56th minute Brodie gathered a pass from junior Lauren Singleton (Charleston) and dribbled down the center of the field and placed a shot on just inside the goal post to even the score at 1-1.
Tusculum continued its attack on goal, forcing Darley to make three saves after Brodie’s strike.
As regulation came to a close the Pioneers and Wolves entered the overtime period tied 1-1. The first overtime saw neither team manage a shot, before Tusculum took a pair of shots in the second overtime period - neither of which required an effort from Darley as the shots missed the goal frame.
Brodie’s goal is the 12th of her career, putting her in a tie for No. 11 in the Newberry record book for career goals scored.
Newberry returns home on Wednesday for a SAC meeting with in-state and conference rival Anderson at 2 p.m.
