NEWBERRY — The Newberry Academy Swim team will be competing at the SCISA State Swim Meet in Augusta, Ga. this Saturday.

The girls’ team is preparing for the future and does not expect to compete for a team state title this year, although some individual medals are not out of the question.

However, the boys’ team is competing for something more urgent. A team state title repeat in SCISA IA-IIA.

Coach Laurie Suber has done all she can to prepare them, including a recent trip to a meet in Hilton Head where the boys came away with top honors.

As in recent years, swimmers must meet qualifying times to compete at the state swim meet, and getting enough swimmers qualified is always a challenge for the Academy.

Suber was pleasantly surprised by some swimmers that qualified in key events as late as the last meet.

The main competition for the boys will likely come from Beaufort Academy and Spartanburg Day School, both larger institutions.

The state swim meet is held at the Augusta Aquatic Center and begins at 10:05 a.m.
