NEWBERRY — The Newberry Academy volleyball team is nearly at the end of their regular season and deep into region play.

On Tuesday, the team competed in a tri-meet with Anderson Christian and King Academy, both region foes.

The Eagles came away with a win against Anderson and a loss to King, leaving their overall record at 8 – 9 and their region record at 4–7.

The win against Anderson came in three sets, 25–23, 21–25, and 26–24.

The competitive match was a back and forth affair.

In the first set, Harley Johnson scored the last five points powering the Eagles to the win. Johnson finished with nine points in the set, and would have 17 in the match, along with two aces, six kills and 10 digs.

In the second set, Amanda Crayne accounted for seven of the points, and finished with 16 points for the match along with four aces.

Kaitlyn Nobles had a great match, finishing with 13 points, eight kills, and four digs. Nobles accounted for the last five points in the third set.

Emma Lindsay finished the match with 17 assists, 10 points and two aces, while Andie Getz had six points, two aces, two kills and three blocks.

Rachel Franklin finished with eight points and Carman Franklin added two points.

The Lady Eagles were not as sharp in the second match of the day, losing to King 20-25, 25–19, and 17–25.

The home team dug a 0-9 hole in the first set, and despite climbing back top a 10-10 tie, let the visitors pull away.

In the second set, Crayne had a nice five point run, giving Newberry a 7–5 lead. The Eagles pulled away to win the set.

In the third set, King put together two, five point runs and Newberry could not get anything going to answer.

For the match, Johnson had 20 points, five aces and four kills.

In other stats of note, Crayne had 12 points, Nobles had 10 digs, and Getz had six blocks.

The team has only one more regular season game scheduled. They travel to face region foe Laurens on Tuesday.

Coach Travis Gilliam has not ruled out adding a game or two (non-region) to help keep the team sharp before the state meet Oct. 18–20 in Sumter.
