ROCK HILL — Newberry College senior Jessie Baldwin (Camden) has been named the South Atlantic Conference’s Runner of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Baldwin finished third in Wingate’s Bulldog Stampede last weekend with a five-kilometer time of 19:44, the best of any conference runner in the event. She was just one second out of second place in the race.
Remarkably, the Bulldog Stampede was Baldwin’s first collegiate race as the biology major had previously only run for her own enjoyment and fitness. She recorded Newberry’s first sub-20 minute 5k time since 2006 and only the second in available Newberry records. This is Newberry’s first known Runner of the Week award.
Baldwin and the Wolves have two meets remaining before the Food Lion SAC Championships, starting with the UNC Charlotte Invitational this Friday afternoon.
