The mission to spruce up the Christmas in front of community hall is gaining ornaments.

Over the summer, a committee was formed by City of Newberry Mayor Foster Senn to give the tall evergreen in the center of town a face lift.

Over 65 individuals, organizations and businesses have given money to fund the new decorations, said organizer Joyce Vigus.

Last week, Newberry County Council gave a $2,000 donation to the tree, which sits on county property.

The City of Newberry has also donated $2,000 to the new lights and ornaments in addition to manpower to decorate the tree and the electricity cost to light it.

In the past the tree has has 500 lights but this year will have 5,000.

Also on the tree will be a new star topper, said Vigus.

There will also be an area around the tree for families to have their Christmas photos made.

Landscaping will also be added.

Vigus says the tree should help bring visitors and shoppers to the downtown area.
