A Thursday morning explosion rocked the Prosperity area.

A worker at Prosperity Metal Recycling (PMR), at 3709 Wheeland School Road, Prosperity, was moving a car with a forklift when it exploded.

Newberry County Emergency Services Coordinator Tommy Long said an initial investigation leads firefighters to believe the fire was caused by a spark in the gas tank.

The fire the spread burning four to five other cars, said Long.

No one was hurt in the fire or the explosion.

Long says that firefighters approached the scene and called in the Newberry County Haz-Mat team because they did not know exactly what they were dealing with when they arrived on the scene.

The S.C. Law Enforcement Division has been called to investigated the explosion.

“Since this had never happened in 40 years of operation, precautions were taken,” according to Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster. “Arson investigators from the sheriff’s office, Newberry County Haz-Mat and a bomb technician from SLED determined the cause.”

Three fire stations and Haz-Mat responded to the scene.

Jane Mundell said she heard the explosion and went around checking her home to see if something was wrong. She then looked outside to see smoke coming from the recycling business and says the smoke smelled like chemicals burning.
