In a physical match on Saturday, the Newberry men’s soccer team was unable to take advantage of offensive chances as the Carson-Newman Eagles escaped Newberry with a 1-0 victory in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams.

The Eagles (3-2, 1-0 SAC) and Wolves (2-3, 0-1 SAC) exchanged possessions for much of the first half, until in the 36th minute. It was in the 36th minute that Carson-Newman’s Evan Kelly found Sindre Welo who beat a diving attempt by Newberry junior keeper Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land).

Carson-Newman outshot the Wolves 24-7, while Sweatt stopped six shots placed on frame by the Eagles.

The Wolves travel to Wingate on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. scheduled kickoff.
