Rain, hail and snow fell on Newberry County over the weekend, but by this morning the sun was shining it all away.

The rain began around midday Friday with more than four inches falling by yesterday afternoon.

The rain wreaked havoc on roadways, with a couple of Friday pile-ups on the interstate.

One pile up involving eight to 10 cars occurred Friday afternoon near the Newberry/Lexington county line, but there were no serious injuries. Detours led to traffic jams into Little Mountain and Chapin.

Predawn yesterday, a vehicle flipped on Highway 121 near I-26 after the road was covered with hail.

Also yesterday, rain caused a car to plunge into a tree on Boyd Crossing, leaving a Newberry High School senior athlete trapped inside. The student was transported to Richland Memorial Hospital after being freed by Newberry County and Prosperity rescue squad volunteers, according to Sheriff Lee Foster. Foster added he talked with the football player and told him his mother would meet him at the hospital. No life-threatening injuries were found, volunteers say.

Rain and wind also brought down some trees and tree limbs in the county. Power lines in the Keitts Cross Roads area were downed yesterday due to the wind and rain.

By mid-afternoon yesterday, snow began to fall across the area with big flakes falling by nightfall.

“DOT (S.C. Department of Transportation) did a good job. There were some icy spots in the county early this morning on bridges, especially farm-to-market roads,” according to Foster.

The snowy roads led schools and daycares to close for the day, and some businesses and government offices opened late.

But by 8 a.m., much of the snow had melted, leaving roads just wet.

There was no storm damage due to rain or snow in the City of Newberry, according to City Manager Eric Budds.

City Fire Chief Keith Minick reports his firefighters responded to two back-to-back fire alarms at Newberry College over the weekend. Both alarms had been pulled by someone around 3 a.m.
