Dear Editor of the Newberry Observer:

We are the members of Senior Girl Scout Troop 930 of Newberry County: Brandy Blanton, Amanda Butler and Katie Corbett. We are currently in the process of earning our Gold Award, which is the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn. Our project is the restoration of Camp Holly Springs in Lynch’s Woods, which was originally a GirlScout camp in the 1950’s. Since then, it has fallen into disrepair. Weeds and other unwanted foliage have overcrowded the area to the point where it can barely be used by any size group.

We are working in coordination with Charles Horn, Ph. D., a professor of biology at Newberry College. Dr. Horn is instructing us in the proper way to dispose of the unwanted foliage without harming the native foliage, some of which is very rare. We are trying our best to maintain the natural value of Camp Holly Springs while restoring it to its original glory and making it functional for groups of all sizes in Newberry and other counties. Our project benefits not just the hard-core recreational individuals within Newberry, but the entire community as well. The camp will be more accessible to normal, everyday people, regardless of their experience with nature, when we have completed our restoration efforts.

Restoring the camp involves not only clearing out the plants we don’t want, but also maintaining the plants we do want and building only the necessary structures to make it more functional to everyone. So far, we have been at work on select Saturdays since August clearing away debris and all of the harmful and/or otherwise unneeded plants under Dr. Horn’s guidance. The community is welcome to assist in our endeavors in any way they can. We would like to express our gratitude to the Newberry College students who have put in their time and energy thus far. We look forward to working with them in the future on this project.

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments regarding our project, please feel free to contact Karen Butler, the leader of Troop 930. She can be reached via e-mail at kbutler0722@hotmail.com.

Thank you for your continued support of Girl Scouting in Newberry County.

Sincerely,

Brandy Blanton, Amanda Butler and Katie Corbett

Newberry
