After entering Tuesday’s final round of the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate at Sevierville Golf Course in a tie for the lead, the 13th-ranked Newberry Wolves outshot the California (Pa.) Vulcans by two shots to claim the tournament championship.

Newberry shot 304-302=606 to outpace the Vulcans’ 304-304=608 thanks to a pair of top five performances from seniors.

Lisa Brandl (Nuremberg, Germany) finished in third with a 73-74=147, three strokes behind medalist Kimesha Anthony of Columbus State. Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain) was one spot behind Brandl in fourth with a 75-74=149.

Julia Daneshfar (Trophy Club, Texas) tied for 11th with a 77-76=153, while Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) and individual competitor Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.) tied for 21st with overall totals of 157. Natalia Perez (Bogota, Colombia) tied for 43rd with a 165.

The Wolves outshot their nearest South Atlantic Conference competition by 16 strokes on the course where the Food Lion SAC Championships will be held in April 2013.

Newberry plays in the NCAA Women’s Golf Division II Fall Preview at the LPGA International - Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla., next Sunday-Tuesday.

Monday play

The 13th-ranked Newberry College Wolves women’s golf team was tied for first place at the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate at the Sevierville Golf Course after shooting a 304 in Monday’s opening round.

Brandl lead the Wolves in a tie for third place after shooting a 3-over par 73 on the par 70, 5,811-yard course. Newberry’s 304 places them in a tie for first place with No. 18 California (Pa.).

Castro shot a 5-over par 75 and is tied for seventh, while Daneshfar shot a 7-over par 77 to sit in a tie for 12th.

Askeland tied for 19th with a 9-over par 79 and Perez tied for 26th with a 10-over par 80. Coleman was competing as an individual and is tied for 36th with a 12-over par 82.

The Wolves and Vulcans hold a two stroke lead over Columbus State, a five stroke lead over West Florida and an eight stroke lead over Lincoln Memorial. No other team is within 10 strokes of Newberry.
