The Newberry Mission choir invites the community to come help wrap up Black History Month at its second annual semi-formal Black History Month Celebration tomorrow. The celebration will honor local black history “stars” and fill the night with music.

“We (the Mission Choir) are hoping for success Saturday night. We just want to do something different for Newberry County and for Newberry High School,” Kimberly Suber, Mission Choir leader, said.

This year, the Mission Choir will celebrate the achievements of local leaders.

“We want it to be an elegant event and show kids different ways to honor somebody,” Suber said.

Local business owner Reggie Cannon, longtime educators James and Rozell Caldwell, community leader John Glasgow and local business owners and retired educators Clyde and Jessie Hill will all be recognized for their community achievements.

“We hope to have students recognize local leaders in the community, but not only recognize them but connect with them as well,” Suber said.

Along with the recognition of local leaders, there will be gospel and R&B tributes performed by Allen University, The Mission Choir, Ryan Bolden with Purposed for Greatness Ministry and other solo artists from the community.

The celebration is the Mission Choir’s biggest fundraiser to travel to competition in New York.

Last year, the Mission Choir won the International Award Choir and the members hope to raise enough money to continue their success.

The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Newberry High School mini-theater and tickets are $5.

A reception will follow immediately after the program.
