Newberry College senior inside linebacker Apollo Stretch (Columbia) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the 2012 season’s opening week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday.

Stretch notched 12 tackles (seven solos, five assists) and a fumble recovery as the Wolves forced four total turnovers on the way to a 46-20 win over Elizabeth City State on Sept. 1.

Stretch was a first team preseason all-SAC selection and is coming off of third team All-American honors from the Beyond Sports Network, two all-region nods and first team all-SAC laurels in 2011. Stretch finished as the South Atlantic Conference leader in tackles per game at 10.5 stops per contest and 105 total tackles. He had eight tackles for loss and three sacks. He had double-digit tackle numbers in five of the 10 games, including 17 in the Bishops Trophy game at Lenoir-Rhyne. He averaged 11.1 stops in conference games last year.
