Bulldogs nip Newberry men’s hoops, 70-62

The Newberry College men’s basketball team was tripped up Saturday, falling to Wingate University , 70-62, in Cuddy Arena.

Newberry (18-7, 8-6 South Atlantic Conference) was led by 15 points and eight rebounds from senior Clemente Martin (Freeport, Bahamas), while Brett Goodwell (Inglewood, Calif.) netted 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Grant Domsic (Winter Garden, Fla.) added 11 points off the bench and Jesse Wheeler (Suwanee, Ga.) scored 10 points, despite battling foul trouble throughout the game.

Wingate (12-13, 8-6 SAC) was led by 16 points from DeMario Mattox. Kenny Villines scored 13 for the Bulldogs and Jamie Vaughn scored nine points.

After the Bulldogs opened the scoring on a three-point play, Newberry took off on a 14-2 run, taking a 14-5 lead on a Kendrick Johnson (Orangeburg) putback under the hoop. A Goodwell jumper with 12:02 extended Newberry’s lead to double digits at 21-11.

The Bulldogs battled back and regained the lead with 3:37 left in the half, when Tommy Coles’ tip-in made it a 26-25 game. Wingate would hold that one-point edge, taking a 30-29 lead into halftime.

Wingate stormed out of the gates in the second half, going on a 14-5 surge in the opening five minutes to take a 44-34 lead on a Vaughn jumper. Newberry responded in the middle of the half with a 10-0 run. Newberry went back in front with 8:08 to play, when a Domsic triple put the scarlet and gray up by a 51-50 margin. But the Bulldogs scored the next seven consecutive points to take the lead for good. Newberry cut the margin to as few as four in the final stretch, but the Bulldogs held on for the eight-point win.

Newberry held a 33-31 advantage on the boards, with 18 of those coming on the offensive end of the floor. The scarlet and gray were only successful on 35 percent of their field goal attempts, making 21-of-60 shots, while Wingate connected on 25-of-48 shots for a 52.1 percentage.

Newberry returns home for Senior Night on Wednesday, when it hosts Brevard College at 8 p.m.

Newberry women fall to Wingate, 83-72

The Newberry College women’s basketball team dropped its third straight road game Saturday by losing to Wingate, 83-72.

Despite the loss, Laura Marquardt (Mt. Pleasant) played a fantastic game, leading her squad in both points (25) and rebounds (9). She shot 7-for-19 from the field and nailed 10-of-13 free throw attempts. Anita Bulcher (Russia, Ohio) tied Marquardt for the game high in rebounds with nine boards. Bulcher also earned 15 points and two blocks.

Anna Atkinson (Marion, N.C.) played an all-around great game while leading the Bulldogs in both rebounds (7) and assists (6). She also scored 17 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field. The leading scorer for Wingate was Kurie Washington (Marion, N.C.) with 19 points.

The home team took the fight right to Newberry in the first half and earned an early advantage. The Bulldogs steadily built their lead with an onslaught of three point plays in the opening minutes. The Bulldogs had a double-digit lead by the 10 minute mark and earned a 16-point lead with 3:30 remaining in the half, their largest lead of the game. NC went back to the locker room at the half trailing, 44-30.

The Bulldogs built their lead by shooting lights out in the opening half. They made 48.5 percent of their field goal attempts and went 5-for-8 from three-point range. Newberry shot 1-for-8 from three-point range and only received two points from the bench. The scarlet and gray also struggled to take advantage of second-chance opportunities, scoring eight points on 10 offensive boards.

Marquardt had her best half of the day in the first and scored 14 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Brittany West (Valdese, N.C.) caught fire from beyond the arc in the first half, capitalizing on all four of her three-point attempts.

Newberry opened up the final half with a 14-5 run which brought it right back into the game. Despite the scarlet and gray pressure, Wingate answered by pushing its lead back to double digits with just over 12 minutes remaining. Newberry cut the lead to 69-65 with 5:45 left on the clock. NC only made three field goals for the remainder of the game which sealed the team’s 10th loss of the season.

Newberry came close to coming back from 14 points down by dominating the paint. NC scored 20 points down low to Wingate’s eight. Newberry’s post players, Bulcher and Sade Coates (Meridian, Miss.), combined for 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor in the second half.

Newberry struggled from three-point range Saturday which put the team in a deep hole. They shot 2-for-15 from downtown and allowed the Bulldogs to sink 61.5 percent from three-point range. Newberry also had 15 turnovers on the day to Wingate’s seven.

The loss puts the Newberry College women’s basketball team at 15-10 overall and 8-6 in the South Atlantic Conference. NC will return home Wednesday to face Brevard at 6 p.m. Wingate (16-9, 7-7 in the SAC) will stay home to play Lenoir-Rhyne this Wednesday at 6 p.m.

NC baseball blasts its way to 12-4 win and sweep of Brevard

The Newberry College baseball team pounded out 20 hits en route to a 12-4 victory and a sweep of Brevard College yesterday at Gil Coan Field.

Newberry moves to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in South Atlantic Conference action, while Brevard drops to drops to 5-5 overall in league action.

Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) was 4-for-5 in the game with two homeruns and three RBIs in the game. Ernie Castellano (Homestead, Fla.) earned the win in 4 2/3 innings of relief to move to 2-1 on the season, giving up one unearned run and striking out six.

Starter Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) earned no decision, pitching 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits, walking four and striking out four.

The scarlet and gray opened the scoring with one out in the second inning, when Rohena smacked his first homerun of the season down the left field line to give Newberry the 1-0 lead.

Newberry tacked onto the lead with four runs in the third. Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) led off the inning with a single up the middle, which was followed up by a single to left field from Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.). John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) scarificed the pair into scoring position and they were driven home on a triple over the centerfielder’s head from Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.).

Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) plated the third run of the inning with an RBI single through the left side. Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) closed out the scoring in the inning with an acrobatic slide around the catcher to touch the plate on an infield single from Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.).

Rohena added to lead again in the top of the fifth, when his two-run homer to left field put Newberry up by a 7-0 margin. Rosa scored later in the inning on a wild pitch by Seth Laughter (Fletcher, N.C.).

Brevard brought three runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) led off the frame with a double off the left field wall and Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) put runners on the corners on a dropped fly ball. Kellen Moman (Greenville) walked to load the bases and Brice Warner (Clover.) walked to bring the first run home. Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) brought a pair of runs home with a one-out single up the middle to push Roman out of the game.

Castellano came into the game and got the next two batters out to put a hold on the damage and set the Newberry lead at 8-3 after five frames.

Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.) added another Tornado run in the bottom of the sixth, as he was plated on the benefit of two Newberry errors.

Newberry added three more runs in the top of the seventh to take an 11-4 lead. Bartz hit a two-run single through the right side with the bases loaded, and Kirkland followed that up with a run-scoring single through the left side.

Newberry scored its final run of the game in the top of the eighth, when Horvath led off the inning with a triple to right-center and was plated on a bloop single by Pollack.

The scarlet and gray return to action Wednesday, as they travel to Hartsville to take on Coker College at 3 p.m. Newberry’s next home series takes place on Saturday and Sunday, as Bloomsburg (Pa.) University visit the Smith Road Complex. First pitch on Saturday is at 7 p.m., while the Sunday matinee doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.

Softball advances to 10-0 with Sunday sweep of St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C. - The Newberry College softball team continued to overwhelm its opponents as the scarlet and gray swept St. Andrews Presbyterian on the road, 4-2 and 7-1. The Sunday sweep extended Newberry’s season-opening winning streak to 10 and dropped the Knights to 4-6.

Game One: Newberry 4, St. Andrews 2

Newberry gained the lead in the third inning and would keep for the rest of the game as Kristen Hicks (Bamberg) won her fifth game of the season with her complete-game six-strikeout performance.

The scarlet and gray added three runs in the following inning as Kat Hammond (Irmo) knocked her fourth homerun of the season. Hammond’s two-run bomb scored Whitney Wiles (Iva), who reached base on a hit by pitch. Catlado’s one-out single scored Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) to give Newberry a 4-0 lead.

Hicks allowed a homerun in the bottom six to Jasmine Dobbin and another earned run the seventh for a final score of 4-2, as Newberry and St. Andrews both had five hits in the game.

Game Two: Newberry 7, St. Andrews 1

A six-run third inning capped a 7-1 victory for Newberry as Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.) moved to 5-0 on the year with her complete game six strikeout outing.

The Knights gained their first lead of the day in the second inning off a Nicole Bailey two-out single scoring Danyell Marquez for a 1-0 lead.

However, the Knight’s lead would be short lived as the scarlet and gray answered in the top of the third with six runs on seven hits. Newberry started the inning with six straight singles as Amanda Schumacher (Greenville) lead off the inning with a one-bagger and was followed by five singles all over the field to score five runs.

Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris) drove in the inning’s final run with her one out single, which scored Stephanie Blazer (Greenville).

Newberry returns to action this weekend as it hosts the Mid-South Invitational in nearby Spartanburg at the 295 Complex.

Meet the 2009 baseball team at Monday's City Night at the Ballpark>/B>

The City of Newberry and Newberry College Baseball proudly present the second annual City Night at the Ballpark with an outstanding opportunity to meet the 2009 squad. There will be an intra-squad game and plenty of attractions and promotions for the family at the Smith Road Complex tonight at 7 p.m.

Admission to the event is complimentary and each fan will receive a souvenir cup commemorating the night, which is good for a free cup of coffee or cocoa from the concession stand. Seating for the evening will be open to all except for seats which are marked “reserved”. In addition, fans of all ages will be able to go down on the field and in the dugouts before, during and after the game and see what it is like to be a college baseball player. There will be ample opportunities for autographs and a chance to really interact and get to know some of the players on the team.

If your child is interested in playing on their own team this spring, the City of Newberry is hosting both youth baseball and softball leagues beginning in April.
