The waters of Newberry County could soon be the spotlight of national TV.

Currently the group is working to bring an NBC Sports fishing tournament to Dreher Island in Newberry County.

The area is near Prosperity and is a state park.

In addition to bringing people to the lake, Capital City Lake Murray County’s Miriam Atria says those involved in the tournament will be staying in the county and that the show will let the nation see the lake and all the area has to offer.

But she adds it costs about $500,000 to bring a tournament like NBC Sports to the area.

However, she adds it will show off the county to 1.6 billion people.

The tourism agency will also host an Oakley bass tournament at Lake Murray in September.

Capital City Lake Murray County will soon be running a national television ad that shows off the four counties - Newberry, Saluda, Richland and Lexington - that are in its area.

The 30 second ad that will premier later this week highlights the Newberry Opera House and other areas in the region.

Also the ad will be shown for 26 weeks with the Oakley tour and reach and estimated 180 households.

But Atria warns Newberry County Council that she will be requesting more money from the county’s accommodation tax fund to help support to tourism group’s efforts.
