Pomaria-Garmany Elementary celebrated Countdown to Kindergarten on Tuesday

The school had 10 students to participate in the First Steps summer readiness program throughout the summer and had a celebratory event with family and school staff.

Mamie Shippy is the kindergarten teacher at Pomaria-Garmany who organized the event at the school by helping rising kindergarten students prepare for the upcoming school year.

Throughout the summer, she makes five visits to each of the students’ homes with their families to help out with reading, literacy and education preparation for kindergarten.

Shippy and Newberry Elementary’s Jackie Holmes are the only teachers in the school district’s elementary schools to participate in Countdown to Kindergarten.

Beth Brooks, Pomaria-Garmany’s principal, along with other school employees celebrated with the kindergartners at the celebration.

In the classroom, parents were provided an overview of the school and classroom procedures and also get an idea of what their children will learn.

Students read aloud, did arts activities and had a Smartboard lesson. Each student received multiple books from the Newberry County First Steps Director Pat Caldwell and Brooks provided snacks as well as gift bags filled with treats and school supplies for the upcoming year.

The students were eager to begin kindergarten and by participating in the countdown program, they received a head start on reading and writing skills. They also were able to work with Shippy and get to know her providing a smoother transition.
