Saturday marks national Call Before You Dig Day. Duke Energy reminds customers that accidental contact with underground electric power lines, natural gas lines, communication lines, water lines and other utility services is extremely dangerous.
Even though the summer heat continues to cook the Carolinas, fall is just around the corner. During the early fall, families across the state will get outside to build fences, cultivate for new grass and plant new trees and shrubs. These and many other outdoor activities involve digging in the dirt.
Avoiding this danger and expense is simple – just call 811 before you dig. By calling 811 from anywhere in the United States, people are automatically put in touch with their local utility underground locating service. They can then ask the 811 representative to notify all local utilities to come to their property and mark the location of underground wires and pipes.
Calling will help avoid death or serious injury caused by coming in contact with a power or gas line. Also, home and business owners can save potentially thousands of dollars in unnecessary repairs if an underground power line, gas pipe, phone cable or water line is accidentally ruptured or broken.
