NC cheer squad wins national competition

The Newberry College cheerleading squad took first place at the Cheersport Nationals competition at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Ga. this past weekend.

In a field with NCAA Division I programs, the scarlet and gray stole the show and were in first place after day one of the competition. Newberry would never relinquish the lead and finished with a score of 794; 10 points better than second-place East Carolina University.

“I'm so proud of our girls,“ said head coach Kristen Regenscheit, “We prepared vigorously for this tournament and our girls’ hard work was rewarded.“

After Newberry and East Carolina, the field rounded out with third-place North Carolina State University, fourth-place University of North Carolina, fifth-place Clark Atlanta University, and sixth-place University of Florida orange.

“This was by far our best and cleanest performance at Cheersport,“ said program director Jessica DeWitt, “The dedication our team has shown this season paid off this weekend.“

The Newberry College cheerleading team will hit the mat again on March 7-8 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia.
