County council gave second reading Wednesday night to an ordinance that would give voters the option of voting for Sunday alcohol sales.

Newberry County Council Chair Buddy Livingston was the only council member to vote against passing the question along to the voters.

Councilman John Caldwell abstained from voting because he owns an ABC package store.

The council will give one more vote to the ordinance on Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. and hold a public hearing on the issues.

So far no one has spoken against the ordinance to hold the Sunday alcohol sales.

If the vote passes, the voters will vote in November if they want Sunday alcohol sales in the county.

Were the vote to pass, alcohol, beer and wine could be sold at stores and restaurants in the county on Sunday.

The City of Newberry also has a September vote on whether alcohol should be sold in restaurants on Sunday.

If the county vote passes, it will include Sunday sales at stores in the city.

But if the county ordinance falls and the city passes only bars and restaurants in the city it can have alcohol for purchase on Sundays.
