Newberry Electric Cooperative is helping bring World War II locally to students.
Last week, Electric Cooperative President and CEO Keith Avery on behalf of the Newberry Electric Board of Directors gave 20 Honor Flight books with stories from local and South Carolina World War II veterans to the Newberry County School District.
The books will be placed into the school libraries and at the district office, said the school district superintendent Bennie Bennett.
The board is also donating the newly published book to the Newberry County Library.
Avery said he hopes the book will personalize history for the students and community by telling the stories of the locals that were apart of the greatest generation.
The stories were complied after a number of local veterans went on the honor flight in April.
Bennett says the book will give students a better understanding of the impact the war had on locals and that local people they know were engaged in the effort.
Avery said on the honor flight in April that a school group was at the Iwo Jima monument and asked a member of the honor flight that fought there to talk to them.
The veteran reportedly told the students, “We did this for you, now go out and make this world a better place.”
By sharing the stories of the greatest generation the co-op hopes to impact students.
The co-op also has copies of the book available for purchase.
