A proposal to swap land in Lynch’s Woods is scheduled for discussion again at Newberry County Council.

At tonight’s meeting, the council will once again be addressed about the issue.

In May, Newberry County Council was slated to start full council discussion involving a request from Pope and Gordon Johnson to swap 12 acres of land they own adjoining the front of Lynch’s Woods for 12 acres on the back side of the park.

The matter had already gone before a council committee that decided the issued needed discussion by full council.

The matter was stalled and is back on the agenda with the Johnson brothers expected to address council again.

However, individuals opposing the swap are already rallying their defense.

The Lynch’s Woods property requested adjoins the Johnsons’ farm and includes a creek but none of the park road and is near the old Girl Scout camp. While the property owners say the swap would allow the park to have a ballfield, opponents say it would have no benefit to the park and hurt the natural quality of the site.

Newberry College Professor Charles Horne said that the stream that would be traded is used by his and other students for educational purposes.

The council will have a right to return down the request from the start or it could go through three readings and a public hearing.

Currently, the agenda does not have any votes scheduled for council to take on the issue at tonight’s meeting.

Newberry County Council meets at 7 p.m. at the Courthouse Annex on College Street.
