Three Newberry wrestlers claim titles at tournament

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The second-ranked Newberry College wrestling team claimed the top wrestler at three weight classes and second at another at the Ed South Invitational held this past weekend. Despite only competing with five wrestlers in the event, the scarlet and gray still finished third with 63 team points.

Claiming the tournament's most outstanding wrestler title was Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) at after winning the 165 pound weight class. Kelly defeated Javonte Ashford of King College in the championship match by a 7-4 decision to claim the title.

At 174-pounds, Josh Whitelock (Rhodesdale, Md.) won his second tournament of the season as he went 4-0 to claim the Ed South title. Whitelock beat Joby Shreckhise of Limestone College by an 11-5 decision to win his weight division.

Bryant Blanton (Summerville) won the 184-pound division as he went undefeated on the day. In the championship match, Blanton pinned Spencer Adams of Campbellsville University at the 2:43 mark. At the tournament, Blanton set a school record for most pins a season.

Competing at 133-pounds, Andrew Young (Summerville) placed second after he fell to Tommy Pretty of Campbellsville University in the championship match by a 9-0 major decision. The runner-up title was Young's second of the season as Young also placed second at the Braves Open.

Dave Newman (Toms River, N.J.) finished out of placement at 197-pounds. after he won his first two matches, but lost in his next two. With the 2-2 showing at the Ed South, Newman's record moves to 11-7 on the year.

Newberry faces off against two teams on Thursday, Feb. 19 with matches against Anderson University at 5 p.m. followed by a match with Division I University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at 8 p.m. The match with UNC will pit the top two teams in the Carolinas as reported by The Takedown Report.

Newberry baseball swept in three-game series by Barry

A ninth-inning rally fell short for the Newberry College baseball team as visiting Barry University won, 6-5, to earn a sweep of the three-game series.

Newberry falls to 5-5 overall with the loss, while Barry is 5-1 going into tomorrow's game with Belmont Abbey at Newberry's Smith Road Complex.

Newberry got on the board first in the bottom of the second without garnering a hit. Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) and Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) drew walks and John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) was hit by a pitch to drive Pollack home and put Newberry up 1-0.

The Bucs took the lead for good in the third inning. Nick Shaw (St. Petersburg, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, and a two-out double down the third-base line by Mitch Rodriguez (Brandon, Fla.) cleared the bases and put Barry up, 4-1.

Shaw extended the lead to 5-1 for the Bucs in the top of the sixth with an RBI-double.

Newberry responded in the bottom half of the inning when Pollack led off with his second homerun of the season with a solo bomb to the pond beyond the left field fence to make it 5-2.

Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) cut the lead to one run with a two-out, two run triple down the right field line to make it 5-4. Barry loaded the bases in the eighth and pushed the lead to 6-4 with a sacrifice fly from Yan Gomes (Miami, Fla.).

Newberry rallied in the ninth, beginning with a one-out bunt single from John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.). Horvath walked and a Pollack single up the middle cut the margin to one run. Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Zach Upton (Clearwater, Fla.) grounded out for the third out and the Barry sweep.

Dale Bennett (Summerville; 0-1) was tagged with the loss for Newberry, allowing four earned runs on five hits in 42⁄3 innings of work. Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) allowed two earned runs on three hits, striking out four in 4-1⁄3 innings. Charley Short (Homestead, Fla.; 2-0) earned the win for Barry, while Josh Holmes (Miami, Fla.; 1) picked up the save.

Pollack was 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead Newberry offensively.

The scarlet and gray return to the diamond on Thursday as they welcome the Yellowjackets of West Virginia State University to the Smith Road Complex. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Newberry tennis match postponed

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Saturday's Newberry College tennis match at Georgia College and State has been postponed due to inclement weather. Both the men and women were scheduled to play tomorrow at 1 p.m. but will now compete with the Bobcats Wednesday at 2 p.m.

The home opener for both teams is scheduled for Saturday against Anderson at 2 p.m.
