One teen is hospitalized and another in jail after a shooting Thursday afternoon in the West End area.

Tyrus Jontel Simms, 18, of 108 Wiltshire Court, Newberry, has been charged with one count of assault and battery with intent to kill, two counts of assault with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

On Monday a bond of $200,000 was set on Simms.

Simms was in the area of Academy and Crosson streets at West End Park when he shot into a car with three people inside of it.

One bullet hit a 19-year-old female in the face causing significant damage to her mouth.

The female underwent surgery on Friday. The gunshot wound was reportedly not life-threatening.

The shooting reportedly stemmed from an earlier altercation.

Simms, who turned 18 on Feb. 8, remained in custody this morning.

Simms, is a former Newberry High football player and senior, is currently out on bond for a September break in to the high school’s fieldhouse. In that case, he was charged with third degree burglary and three counts of auto break-ins.

It is alleged that Simms also broke into three coaches’ vehicles on Aug.16.

Newberry police are still working on the investigation and interviewing witnesses in the case.

Police report they are trying to get to the bottom of what occurred during the fight that proceeded the shooting. More arrests connected to the case are possible. Anyone with information about the shooting or altercation is asked to call police at 321-1010.
