Newberry Rotary welcomed their district governor on Friday.

Kim Gramling is the district governor for district 7750 and recognized the efforts of the Newberry club to continue building its membership and serving the community.

She applauded the club for meeting 130 percent of their goals for giving financially and was excited to talk about the international rotary message for the upcoming year which is all about peace through service.

She mentioned that the Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka believes in sharing and also starts each day with a smile.

She also recalled that his job as international president and all the other presidents for the individual clubs are the same.

In fact a goal for Tanaka is to take Rotary’s international membership from 1.2 to 1.3 million and he wants Rotary to have a big voice around the world.

Here are some ways that Rotary is helping out:

• Gramling mentioned that the military approached Rotary club about helping provide clean water filters to other countries in need of it. The military officers would go into the villages to deliver the filters so that those people will have a chance to receive clean water.

• Rotary is all about increasing membership but they also want to keep members. The theme for this year is Reach One, Keep One and Gramling encouraged people to keep up with their fellow Rotarians.

• The Coins for Alzheimer’s Trust (CART) is set up so that members can put in loose change for research about this disease.

• Polio is a major mission project for Rotary as they want to end polio.
