College Street will be getting a new look next year but soon there will be changes to the cemetery.
The City of Newberry has been granted a $400,000 from the S.C. Department of Transportation to give College Street a face-lift similar to the one on Fair Street in the Oakland Mill community. Another $400,000 has been applied to the project by the Newberry County Transportation Commission.
The work will go from Smith Road to just past the college going towards Main Street.
The survey work as started on the project that will include new medians, plants and lights and the design phase is under way.
Once the design phase is complete the bid process will start.
However, Newberry City Manager Jeff Shacker says the work on the road likely will not start until the first of the year.
But in looking at ways to improve the area, the city leaders have met with Rosemont Cemetery Committee members and decided to start removing the fence around the cemetery.
The chain link fence was put up in the 1960s and has started to rust.
According to Newberry Police Chief Jackie Swindler the gates going into the old cemetery have not been locked at night since 1994.
There will be some work done around high areas where the fence is removed to make the area around College and e streets safe.
Also the city plans to clean up on the hill between Smith Road and the graveyard and keep the area grassed and mowed.
