The City of Newberry Police Department made a number of charges during its Fourth of July traffic safety campaign.

The campaign that ran June 18 until July 9 targeted drunk and impaired drivers, speeders and unsafe motorists.

During the campaign license checks and road patrols were done, according to Newberry Police Sgt. Chuck Rogers.

The Newberry police charged one person with driving under the influence, 13 for driving under suspension, one for no S.C. driver’s license in possession, one with simple possession of marijuana, three with minor in possession of alcohol, two for open container, one for leaving the scene of an accident, one for carrying a pistol unlawfully, one for disregarding a stop sign, one for no proof of insurance, one for failure to register a vehicle, one for window tint violation, two for failing to yield the right-of-way and one for following too closely.

Also 88 tickets were written for speeding.

The extra patrols also was able to capture one wanted person.

The road patrols will continue through the summer and Labor Day holiday as part of the statewide campaign 100 Deadly Days of Summer and the Sober or Slammer campaigns.
