The Newberry chapter of the Eat Smart Move More meeting is still in the beginning stages but they are making progress to making Newberry County healthier.

At Thursday’s meeting, three strategy teams were formed and more members joined onto a team which includes tobacco, healthy eating and active living.

The teams will also look over the survey results taken from community members around the county and discuss and come up with ideas for healthier living.

Survey results were done online through Survey Monkey and they had 25 people which is actually a fair amount. Questions were asked pertaining to what Newberry County offered in terms of recreation and activity as well as what the county offers in terms of health food choices.

The survey helps to put into perspective the healthy and unhealthy ways in the county.

At the August meeting, the teams will report on what they have talked about and present it at the meeting.

This will give the group overall a focus and also the teams a focus on what to improve upon.

Also in the works for the Newberry group is a website and a Facebook page which will help garner feedback from the community and help them reach out to the community more.

The group also finalized their mission and vision statement which is simple and direct and basically says that they will move the county towards healthier choices in all areas of the residents lives which includes, living, working, learning, praying and playing.

The next meeting for the group is Aug. 9 at 11 a.m. in the Newberry hospital board room.

The Newberry group is just one of the 28 counties around the state to receive a grant through the Healthy South Carolina Initiative.

The group received a $12,000 grant in which they will use to make healthier choices and alternatives in relation to healthier lifestyle choices with activity, eating and tobacco use.
