The first steps were taken Tuesday in the construction of a new administrative office for the School District of Newberry at Newberry City Council Tuesday.
The new facility is proposed to be constructed on Main Street next to the Newberry County Career Center.
The district does not own all the land it needs on the career center property and is looking to purchase 1.71 acres of land next to the center from West Development.
But the land is zoned for low density residential and not the needed zoning for public and institutional use.
On Tuesday the city council gave the first of two readings on the zoning change and on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. the council will hold a meeting to give the second and final reading.
