Newberry City Council gave the first of two readings Tuesday to change the zoning to allow for new duplexes to be build on Radio Street off Glenn Street.

Bobby Smith currently owns the property and is planning to sell two lots to Billy White.

White currently owns three duplexes on Glenn Street near Newberry Academy and wants to build new ones behind them.

Smith told council that his family has owned the property since 1929 and that he lives close to the duplexes and has a big interest in keeping the community nice.

In May the council was asked to consider rezoning 10 lots to allow for the duplexes and rejected the motion with a 4-2 vote.

The council did ask that the issue return to the planning commission for consideration of rezoning just two of the lots.

With zoning commission approval all of the council voted to go ahead with first reading of the zoning change.

On Tuesday at a 5 p.m. meeting the council will vote on the second and final reading of the zoning change.

The meeting will be held at city hall.
